How to Assess the Value of Our Labor

What is this resource?

How to Assess the Value of Our Labor is a participatory workshop on creative labor, value, compensation, and the work that often goes unseen.

Through reflection, storytelling, and group dialogue, participants map both visible and invisible forms of their work and examine the systems shaping what gets paid and what doesn’t.

The session is designed to support critical awareness, peer learning, and practical reflection rather than prescriptive financial advice.

Are you interested in examining the ways you understand and assign value to your labor, particularly within creative and cultural work? Participants engage in reflective prompts, embodied awareness exercises, paired storytelling, and collective discussion to trace the often-invisible dimensions of their practice—emotional labor, caregiving, community-building, cultural translation, and administrative work.

Together, we explore how dominant economic and cutural systems shape what gets compensated, what gets normalized, and what remains unrecognized. Participants will map their own labor across paid and unpaid categories, reflect on how value is assigned to different forms of work, and share strategies for naming, negotiating, and sustaining their creative practice.
